Roger Van der Poel (faculty/media)
Roger Van der Poel was born in Portimão, Portugal. Portuguese/Dutch dancer, Roger received his dance training at the Escola de Dança do Conservatório Nacional in Lisbon. He worked for the Ballet Gulbenkian (2003-2004), Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève (2004-2006) and joined Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) 2 in 2006. He started dancing for NDT 1 in August 2009. Since he joined NDT 2 he performed works by many NDT choreographers, such as Jiří Kylián, Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, Crystal Pite, William Forsythe, Hans van Manen, Marco Goecke, Gabriela Carrizo and Franck Chartier.
Since 2011 he is a regular teacher for the NDT Summer Intensive and NDT Open Studio and has made guest appearances as a teacher in dance studios and dance schools in Europe, Canada and the United States. Since 2014 he has become regular faculty for chuthis. movement intensive and chuthis. Moves in North America. He has been teaching NDT repertoire at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and re-mounted León/Lightfoot’s Sleight of Hand with Ballet Zurich and Norwegian National Ballet.
Roger is the recipient of the ‘2007 Encouragement Award’ in Amsterdam and the award ‘Zwaan – Most Impressive Dance Performance 2008′ for his part in Hans van Manen’s Simple Things. In 2013, Roger was the lead organizer of NDT’s Switch event (the annual NDT dancers’ choreographic workshop).
